How to Avoid Eye Strain

Avoiding eye strain is a lot easier said than done. This is because this is a problem that presents itself in some of our daily tasks including reading, driving and using a computer. Most people cannot afford to quit their job just because their eyes feel strained- so instead they need to come up with a way to avoid strain on their eyes using the best ways possible.

If you have tired, sore, itchy, dry or watery eyes, headaches, a sore neck or any other pain involving your eyes, then there is a good chance that you have eye strain, especially if you have been staring at a certain item for a long period of time.
Although there is no medication to take to banish this form of strain for good, there are ways to avoid it at the office, at home and anywhere else that it might attack.

Avoiding Eye Strain with a Change of Lighting

A main reason for eye strain is either bright light or very dim light. Both can cause your eyes to over work and thus cause them to strain. The best way to avoid this is by re-adjusting your lighting system at home and at work. When doing visually intensive, such as working with a computer, make sure the light is directed right at what you are doing. If you are watching television, then try to dim the lights to keep the glare from hurting your eyes. While reading, position a light behind you so it can light up the pages. If you are driving, make sure you use your high beams and lights at night to stop your eyes from straining to see the surroundings. And, finally, when working outside, make sure you always wear protective sunglasses to avoid the glare of the sun.

How to Avoid Eye Strain through Rest

Another way to stop straining your eyes is to give them exactly what they need- a break from the concentration. If you are at work, try to focus on another task for a few minutes every hour. Do some filing, make a business call or simply focus on something in the distance instead of right close up. Or, you can try a relaxation exercise where you place your elbows on your desk, palms facing up and rest your eyes directly into your palms. Breathe deeply and let the tension from your palms massage your eyes. Doing this several times a day can prevent those annoying headaches and discomfort for your eyes.

Make an Appointment with your Eye Doctor

A final way to avoid eye strain is to visit your optometrist who can recommend appropriate measures. Although in most instances this type of strain is not a severe problem, sometimes it can be a result of an underlying issue which may need treatment. You may even be able to avoid strain on your eyes by being fitted for glasses, corrective lenses or prescription eye drops. The only way to know for sure is to make an appointment to see your eye doctor, as they will be able to provide the best strategies for eye strain treatment.
